atlantica: Earth, photographed by SMS-1, July 1974.
12 images, photographed at 1500 UTC each day 1st-13th July 1974 (image from the 7th too glitched, discarded ).
SMS-1 was part of the Synchronous Meteorological Satellite program, a successful early attempt by NASA to improve weather forecasting with imagery from space. The successor programme to SMS, GOES, is ongoing.
(Images are watermarked “GOES-1” in the upper left, but this appears to be a mistaken addition by the GIBBS data system; that satellite was not launched until 1975.)
